What Makes Our Weed Control Different

Effective weed control isn't about spraying every weed you see after it's already 6 inches tall. That's the reactive approach most companies take. We take a proactive prevention strategy that stops weeds before they germinate.

Here's how it works:

Pre-Emergent Treatments are applied before weed seeds germinate. Think of it as a chemical barrier in the soil that prevents seeds from sprouting. In North Texas, timing is everything. We apply pre-emergent herbicides in late winter (February to early March) to block summer annual weeds like crabgrass (Digitaria spp.), and again in late summer (September) to prevent winter annual weeds like henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) and chickweed (Stellaria media). Miss these critical application windows, and you'll spend the rest of the season chasing weeds that could have been prevented.

Post-Emergent Treatments target weeds that are already visible in your turf. These are spot treatments applied to broadleaf weeds like dandelions (Taraxacum officinale), clover (Trifolium spp.), and dollarweed (Hydrocotyle spp.). We use selective herbicides that kill weeds without harming your grass. Post-emergent applications are part of every treatment in our 7-visit program, so if a weed slips through, we handle it on the next visit.

Most companies wait until you call and complain about weeds before they come back out. We include spot treatment on every single visit. That's the difference between a lawn care service and a lawn care partner.

We're licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA License #0823737) and trained in proper herbicide application. That means we know which products work on which weed species, and we apply them at the right rate to protect your lawn and the environment.

Why Weed Control Matters in North Texas

North Texas lawns face unique weed pressure because of our mix of clay soil, hot summers, and suburban landscapes where weeds spread quickly from common areas and shared spaces.

Broadleaf weeds like white clover (Trifolium repens) and dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) thrive in North Texas spring and fall. They spread fast through seed dispersal, and once they flower, they release hundreds of seeds into your lawn. If left untreated, they'll outcompete your grass for water, nutrients, and sunlight.

Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is the other major issue. It germinates when soil temperatures hit 55-60°F (usually late March in our area), and by June, it's taken over thin spots in your lawn. The only way to stop crabgrass is with a properly timed pre-emergent herbicide application. Once it's actively growing, it's nearly impossible to kill without damaging your turf.

Sedges like nutsedge (Cyperus spp.) are particularly challenging because they're not true grasses and require specialty herbicides. They thrive in poorly drained areas and reproduce through underground tubers.

Weeds don't just look bad. They weaken your lawn by stealing nutrients, creating bare spots, and giving pests like white grubs (beetle larvae) a place to establish. A weed-free lawn is a healthy lawn, and a healthy lawn is more drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and resilient during our brutal Texas summers.

That's why we don't treat weed control as an optional add-on. It's a core part of every treatment we do.

The Weed Control Process

Our weed control program is built into every visit of our 7-treatment program. Here's how it works:

Treatment 1
(February)

Pre-emergent application to block spring and summer weeds. This is the most important treatment of the year. We apply a granular pre-emergent herbicide that creates a barrier in the top layer of soil. If we miss this window, you'll fight crabgrass all summer.

Treatments 2-6
(March-October)

Post-emergent spot treatments on every visit. We walk your lawn, identify active weeds, and apply targeted selective herbicides. If you have clover in your flower beds or dandelions near the driveway, we treat them without overspray to protect ornamental plants.

Treatment 7
(November)

Fall pre-emergent application to block winter annual weeds like henbit, chickweed, and annual bluegrass (Poa annua). This keeps your lawn clean through the dormant season so you're not pulling weeds in January.
Between treatments, if you notice a weed outbreak, just call or text. We'll come back out at no extra charge. That's part of our weed-free guarantee: if weeds return between scheduled visits, we re-treat for free.

We also adjust our approach based on your lawn's specific needs. If you have a shaded area where clover thrives, we'll increase post-emergent herbicide coverage in that area. If you're in a newer neighborhood with construction debris in the soil, we'll monitor for nutsedge and treat it separately (nutsedge requires specialty herbicides with halosulfuron or sulfentrazone as active ingredients).

Common Weeds We Control

Broadleaf Weeds:
- Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale)
- White clover (Trifolium repens)
- Red clover (Trifolium pratense)
- Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule)
- Chickweed (Stellaria media)
- Dollarweed (Hydrocotyle spp.)
- Oxalis (Oxalis spp.)

Grassy Weeds:
- Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.)
- Annual bluegrass or Poa annua (Poa annua)
- Dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum)

Sedges:
- Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)
- Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus)

Each weed type requires a different herbicide approach. Some respond to pre-emergent applications, others need post-emergent spot treatments, and sedges need specialty herbicides because they're not true grasses. That's why experience matters—Brian knows exactly which products work on which weed species in North Texas soil and climate conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pre-emergent herbicides work immediately but you won't see results until weeds fail to germinate (which means you won't see crabgrass in spring). Post-emergent treatments kill visible weeds within 7-14 days. Some tough weeds like clover may require multiple applications.

Yes, when applied correctly. We use EPA-registered herbicides that are safe once dry (usually 2-4 hours). Keep pets and kids off treated areas until products have dried completely.

No. We use selective herbicides that target dicot (broadleaf) weeds without damaging monocot turfgrass. Non-selective herbicides (like glyphosate) kill everything, but we never use those on established lawns.

Weed control takes time. Pre-emergent herbicides prevent new weeds but don't kill existing ones. Post-emergent herbicides kill visible weeds but don't prevent new seeds from germinating. That's why our program includes both types throughout the year—it's the only way to achieve long-term weed control.

No one can honestly guarantee zero weeds. Wind, birds, and neighbors' lawns constantly introduce new weed seeds into your turf. But with consistent treatment, we can keep weed populations below 5% coverage, which is considered "weed-free" by turfgrass industry standards.

Organic options for pre-emergent weed control are very limited and less effective than synthetic products like prodiamine or dithiopyr. For post-emergent control, we use selective herbicides that break down quickly in soil. Brian can discuss specific product options when he evaluates your lawn.
