Fertilization
Year-Round Lawn Fertilization Designed for North Texas
A healthy, green lawn doesn't happen by accident in North Texas. Between heavy clay soil, temperature swings from 20°F winters to 105°F summers, and prolonged heat stress, your lawn needs consistent nutrition throughout the year to stay thick and lush.
North Texas Lawn Solutions provides professional fertilization services across Frisco, Little Elm, and surrounding communities. Our 7-treatment program delivers exactly what your lawn needs, when it needs it—no cookie-cutter approach, no rushed drive-by service.
Brian Milliken, owner and Texas Department of Agriculture licensed professional, personally oversees every treatment to ensure your lawn gets the care it deserves.

Our 7-Treatment Fertilization Program
Treatment 1
(Late February/Early March)
Pre-emergent herbicide that is designed to prevent warm season grassy weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtails, plus more. While also preventing warm season broadleaf weeds like spurge, carpetweed, purslane plus more. This treatment creates a barrier in the soil before warm season weeds begin to germinate.
Treatment 2
(April)
Balanced N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) with micronutrients and root hormone stimulators. This fertilizer application is designed to encourage steady green-up and support root development after winter dormancy. Avoids excess growth that invites disease or frost damage.
Treatment 3
(May)
Slow release nitrogen-rich fertilizer to support lateral growth and turf density. Helps lawn outcompete weeds and builds resilience before extreme heat arrives.
Treatment 4
(June)
Summer stress formula with iron supplement to keep your lawn green during the hottest months without over-stimulating growth.
Treatment 5
(August)
Light feeding with potassium-rich fertilizer with micronutrients including iron, manganese and zinc. Designed to help your lawn recover from summer heat stress, strengthen root systems and improve winter hardiness.
Treatment 6
(September - October)
Long lasting pre-emergent herbicide that creates a barrier in the soil to prevent fall cool season weeds from germinating. This treatment targets weeds that sprout as soil temperatures decrease, helping lawns remain weed free through fall and early winter.
Treatment 7
(November)
Final pre-emergent of the calendar year that provides extended control of winter weeds while suppressing early spring germination. As grass growth begins to slow and enters dormancy this application will prevent weeds like poa annua (bluegrass), rescuegrass, henbit, purslane, chickweed and more from entering the treated area.
Between treatments, Brian is always available by phone or text. If you notice something off with your lawn, he'll come take a look and adjust our approach if needed. No extra charge for that—it's just part of the service.
Every treatment is customized based on your lawn's condition, grass type, and the weather we're having. If it's too hot, too dry, or your lawn isn't ready for a scheduled treatment, Brian will postpone it. We care more about long-term lawn health than checking a box on a schedule.
Why Fertilization Matters in North Texas
Our heavy clay soil (typically 40-60% clay content) compacts easily and doesn't hold nutrients well. Without regular fertilization, your lawn slowly starves, even if you water correctly. Clay particles bind phosphorus and limit nitrogen availability, making supplemental feeding critical.
Hot summers exceeding 100°F and occasional hard freezes below 20°F stress grass and deplete nutrients faster than in milder climates. Extreme temperature fluctuations force grass to consume stored nutrients rapidly.
St. Augustine grass and Bermuda grass (the most common warm-season turfgrass types in our area) have different nutritional requirements throughout the growing season. St. Augustine requires 3-4 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet annually, while Bermuda needs 4-6 pounds for optimal density.
Without proper fertilization, your grass weakens and invasive weeds like dandelions, clover, crabgrass, and nutsedge take over. A well-fed lawn is your best defense against weed pressure.
Balanced fertilization prevents excessive thatch buildup (the layer of dead organic matter between grass blades and soil) while maintaining adequate density for healthy turf.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend four fertilizations per year, timed specifically for North Texas growing seasons. This schedule ensures your lawn gets consistent nutrition without over-fertilizing during stress periods like mid-summer heat or winter dormancy.
Yes. St. Augustine is one of the most common turfgrass types we treat. Our program includes the right balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that St. Augustine needs throughout the year, adjusted for its shade tolerance and moderate nitrogen requirements.
Light rain within 24 hours can actually help treatments absorb into the soil profile. Heavy rain within 2-3 hours may wash away some granular product, and Brian will come back out if needed. We monitor weather forecasts and avoid treating when heavy rain is likely.
Yes, once the product has dried. Keep pets off treated areas until dry to prevent ingestion or paw irritation.
We use a combination of synthetic and organic-based products, depending on what your lawn needs. Brian can discuss specific product options when he evaluates your lawn. Organic fertilizers release nutrients more slowly but may not address severe deficiencies as quickly as synthetic formulations.
Our 7-treatment program includes both fertilization and weed control herbicide applications. They work together—healthy, well-fed grass naturally crowds out weeds through competitive density and vigorous growth.
